What is Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is a holistic remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body. Bowen therapy can be used to treat musculoskeletal or related neurological problems including acute sports injuries and chronic or organic conditions. It is gentle and relaxing and does not use forceful manipulation.
Bowen therapy is performed on the superficial and deep fascia. The fascia, or soft tissue, is the part of the connective tissue that envelops, separates and influences every organ and tissue in the body.
Bowen Therapy may offer relief from pain, long-term injuries and illnesses, improved health and flexibility, improved sporting performance, relaxation, and emotional and mental well-being.

The Bowen technique also known as Bowenwork is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. It is sometimes called the homoeopathy of bodywork. It utilises small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly. The Bowen technique offers tremendous benefit to clients with very little effort on the part of the practitioner.
​​​Rather than focusing on a single complain, the Bowen technique addresses the entire body, by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls over 80% of bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors. Most people today live in a constant state of high stress and sympathetic ANS over-stimulation (fight, flight or freeze mode). Healing can occur only after the ANS shifts from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance (rest, relax and repair mode). The Bowen technique seems to catalyse that shift.
During sessions, clients often quickly drop into deep relaxation or fall asleep and stomach gurgling. Both of these changes are indications of a profound release from stress and a shift towards parasympathetic dominance. This shift could explain, in part the common observation that Bowen sessions seem to reactivate the recovery process in situations where healing from trauma, sickness or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau.
In contrast to other hands-on disciplines where the practitioner imposes correction on the client through the technique performed, the Bowen technique allows the body to heal itself with minimal intervention.
